War has been raging in the middle of Europe for a year now. On our Instagram channel, Olga Zhuk, deputy director of contemporary art and literature at the Mystetskyi Arsenal in Kyiv, has once again taken the helm in a "takeover" to mark this horrific anniversary. She shares her thoughts, images and hopes, representative of so many Ukrainian cultural workers whom we should listen to closely to learn what their reality looks like right now, what drives them - and what they are struggling with.
In this issue, you will also meet Torsten Casimir, Frankfurter Buchmesse's spokesperson since mid-January, for a #RealTalk. At the 75th Frankfurter Buchmesse (18-23 October 2023), publishers can expect a new offer for their rights trade, the Publishers Rights Centre. And, as we do every year, we are promoting our funding programmes.
Registration is already open for our digital networking format "The Hof" and its first session "The Hof Kick-Off: How We Meet & Deal in 2023" which takes place on 30th March. Our special guests will be Peter McGuigan, Founder of Ultra Literary, and Jenny Kuehne, Director Rights & Licensing Solutions, Frankfurter Buchmesse. The event is free and we guarantee stimulating talks and exciting discussions in a relaxed atmosphere!

New at #fbm23: Publishers Rights Centre
|
| A new offer for rights and licensing managers from publishing houses: Located right next to the Literary Agents & Scouts Centre (LitAg) and opening on the Tuesday of the book fair week, the new Publishers Rights Centre (PRC) offers a calm workspace at the fair. The PRC package includes a table, two exhibitor passes and 15 trade visitor tickets, and can be booked with an introductory discount of 15 per cent. The official registration deadline is 31 March.

Funding programmes to the 75th Frankfurter Buchmesse
|
| Participants wanted for the Buchmesse funding programmes: While the Invitation Programme enables publishers from countries with a developing book industry to participate in the Frankfurter Buchmesse (18-22 October 2023), the Frankfurt Fellowship Programme is aimed at publishers, editors, licensing managers and literary agents from all over the world. In addition, the Special Programme for publishers from Ukraine and neighbouring countries will take place. Frankfurt International Translators, on the other hand, offers a programme specially tailored to literary and non-fiction translators. Frankfurter Buchmesse will cover the travel costs, accommodation costs within Germany and a share of the catering costs, with financial support from the Federal Foreign Office. The application deadline is 30 April 2023.

We start our #RealTalkFBM with Torsten Casimir. Until January, as editor-in-chief of the trade magazine Börsenblatt, he attended Frankfurter Buchmesse for many years as a journalist. | What's it like to unintentionally become an expert on the topic of "institutional work and challenges in times of war"? We handed over our Instagram channel @buchmesse to Olga Zhuk, Deputy director of contemporary art and literature at the Mystetskyi Arsenal in Kyiv, for a few days at the beginning of the war in Ukraine - representing the many Ukrainian cultural workers who suddenly found themselves in a war zone. What has changed since then? Has anything changed? A second Instagram takeover by @cabaret.zhuzhu has just taken place.

| Salon Francfort: Franco-German Publishers' Meeting
|
| Fancy being part of licensing talks and networking with German colleagues? Publishers, programme directors and editors of French fiction publishers can now apply to take part in the Salon Francfort in July. Here, ten selected German-language publishers will pitch their titles that they consider suitable for the French market. The supporting programme offers space for culture, panel discussions and networking. The aim is to promote the transfer of German literature to France. The Salon Francfort takes place to mark the 60th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty; travel and hotel expenses are covered.

Italian publishers: Editors' Trip Nuove Correnti in June
|
| As a prelude to the Italian Guest of Honour appearance next year, employees from independent Italian publishing companies are invited to a seven-day Editors' Trip (11-17 June 2023) to Germany. Frankfurter Buchmessse will cover the costs of travel and accommodation within Germany, a share of the catering costs and a travel allowance to and from the event. The application deadline for the first Frankfurter Buchmesse Fair Editors' Trip Nuove Correnti is 6 April.

| Lisa Weeda: "It’s a very emotional story"
|
| Lisa Weeda's debut novel "Aleksandra" focuses on the Eastern part of Ukraine and was published in Germany exactly one year after the beginning of the Russian attack. The moving, magical realist story by the Dutch-Ukrainian screenwriter and virtual reality director has already captivated readers in the Netherlands: It topped the Dutch bestsellers’ list and was named the best Dutch debut novel of 2022. It has also been translated into numerous languages. At Books at Berlinale 2023 the novel has been presented to an audience of film producers. We talked to Lisa Weeda at the event in Berlin.

180,000 participants, 121 countries, 2,330 events

| Thoroughly analysed and visually presented: The statistics for #fbm22 are here! With 93,000 trade visitors and 87,000 private visitors, the international industry get-together was very busy. Over 4,000 exhibitors were present in the halls. On another positive note: With 2,330 events on the exhibition grounds and in the city, #fbm22 was a place for industry-specific training, political discussions and a literature festival all at the same time. For 2023, we expect even more lively participation; the closing date for exhibitor registrations for the 75th Frankfurter Buchmesse (18.-22.10.2023) is 31 March.

This is how many times the hashtag #BookTok has been searched so far on the entertainment platform TikTok. (Source: TikTok) Using #BookTok, young literature fans in particular get together and talk about their favourite works. Frankfurter Buchmesse 2022, by the way, will also be found there - around the TikTok Stage on our Agora!
