Dear reader,

We are starting the new year with two calls to action: First, we invite all booksellers to send in their favourite literary quote from this year's guest of honour, Italy! Perhaps it will then feature on the popular "reading mug" in October. Second, the German Publishers and Booksellers Association is once again looking for candidates for the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade and invites you to join in the search.

In February, our online talk and networking format "The Hof", is all about the big questions surrounding AI (r)evolution and we invite you to join the discussion.

Our book-to-screen activities are a focal point that will keep us busy throughout the year. It's all a question of which books offer the most potential for screen adaptations - and sometimes vice versa. Read, for example, what's coming up at "Books at Berlinale" in March!

Enjoy reading!

Quote for our 2024 reading mug wanted!

Those who know it, love it: the Frankfurter Buchmesse reading mug. For this year's mug, we are on a search for a literary quote from the Guest of Honour country Italy. Booksellers and bookshop employees have until 22 February 2024 to submit their favourite literary quote by an Italian author. The prize for the winner and his/her bookshop colleagues consists of ten reading mugs, ten trade visitor day tickets and an invitation for two people to the Opening Ceremony of Frankfurter Buchmesse 2024 in October.

Guest of Honour line-up: Who will follow Italy?

Every year, a different guest country is a key focal point of Frankfurter Buchmesse and presents its literary and cultural characteristics in all their facets to the reading public and the international publishing world. After Slovenia was a guest in Frankfurt in 2023, Italy will do the honours this year. The following guest countries have also already been confirmed; look forward to the big wide world of books with the Philippines (2025), the Czech Republic (2026) and Chile (2027)!

The Peace Prize of the German Book Trade 2024: Who will succeed Salman Rushdie?

The public call for entries for the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade 2024 is open. Citizens have until 1 March 2024 to submit proposals for this prestigious award. Every year since 1950, the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels (German Publishers and Booksellers Association) has honoured the work of a "personality who has made an outstanding contribution to the realisation of the idea of peace, primarily through their work in the fields of literature, science or art" with 25,000 euros going to the winner.

Books at Berlinale

"Cesare's Story": will Italian bestseller be adapted for the big screen?

Ten international books that lend themselves to literary adaptations will be presented at this year's Books at Berlinale. The pitch event connects film producers with publishers and literary agents. From Italy, the Guest of Honour at Frankfurter Buchmesse 2024, the bestseller "La storia di Cesare. Scegliere a occhi chiusi la felicità" ("Cesare's Story. Choosing Happiness with Your Eyes Closed") is entering the race. Valentina Mastroianni's moving memoir tells the story of her son Cesare, who lost his sight due to a hereditary disease. Despite the many challenges the family faces, it is a story about strength, resilience, courage and the love of life.

"You create, we connect": Annick Maes, CARTOON

Frankfurter Buchmesse and the CARTOON initiative (Brussels) are launching a cooperation in 2024 to promote networking between the publishing industry and the film/TV/animation industry. General Director Annick Maes explains how the association supports the development of the European animation industry, builds bridges with the book industry and how publishers can benefit from CARTOON activities, for example at the "Cartoon Movie" format in Bordeaux, which will take place in March.
