Not a fairy tale: How the book fair red carpets once ended up at the Christmas market
|
Stand construction, hall design, signage: as organisers of Frankfurter Buchmesse, we cannot (yet) do without materials that must be disposed of once the fair is over. At the same time, it is possible to reuse materials sensibly. That is one of the findings from the pilot project that Frankfurter Buchmesse carried out this year with the Leipzig-based company TRASH GALORE. An interview with Anne-Sophie Müller (Management, Network & Reporting at TRASH GALORE) and Tanja Väth (architect in the Fair Operations team at Frankfurter Buchmesse)

THE HOF: Looking back at #fbm23 and ahead to 2024
|
Originally developed as a substitute for business networking during the coronavirus pandemic, our digital event format "The Hof" has now achieved cult status. It regularly attracts an ever-growing community to the screens, members of which met live for the first time at #fbm23 in cooperation with Publishers without Borders.
On 30 November at 5 p.m. CET, the mix of industry talk and relaxed musical entertainment will move into the next round online. Guests are Anthony John Balisi (National Book Development Board, Philippines), Valeria Agliuzzo (Edizioni Centro Studi Erickson SpA, Italy) and Lola Shoneyin (publisher and winner of the Aficionado Award 2023, Nigeria). The topic: "The Hof: Key takeaways from Frankfurt - and a look into 2024". Participation is free of charge.

Media library: #fbm23 goes into extra time for you
|
For five days in October, international industry professionals, authors and experts exchanged views on the topics that are currently shaping the book industry and socio-political discourse. Whether climate change, the crisis of democracies or wars: the dominant international conflicts found a discursive echo at the fair. Artificial intelligence was at the centre of the industry exchange. Developments in the fields of audio and academic publishing were also in the spotlight.
Would you have liked to attend some of these events? The #fbm23 goes into overtime for you in the media centre, where you can watch the highlights free of charge.

Personal stories, universal values: 75 years of human rights
|
Which global values does the international publishing community continue to share in times of turmoil and uncertainty? Six publishing personalities from six different countries came together to celebrate and underline the importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights during a very special event, organised by the United Nations and Frankfurter Buchmesse. The contributions by Lola Shoneyin (Nigeria), Nataša Kramberger (Slovenia), Sofia Cheliak (Ukraine), Inès Bayard (France), Corinna Kulenkamp (Germany) and Karina Bolasco (Philippines) were as emotional as they were insightful. They presented their favourite articles of the declaration in their native languages and shared their very personal stories associated with these.

We need reading: Ljubljana Reading Manifesto
|
How does reading promote analytical thinking? And how do the processes in the brain differ when a text is read on paper or on a screen? The Ljubljana Reading Manifesto was created as part of Slovenia's Guest of Honour appearance at #fbm23. It has been signed by the International Publishers Association, the Federation of European Publishers, PEN International, the International Federation of Library Associations and the German Academy for Language and Poetry, among others. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the central importance of reading at a high level as a key human skill in the digital age.
